The small wooden church in the Maramureșean style, located on the banks of the Săsar River, is one of the most beautiful buildings in Baia Sprie. It was built between 1998 and 2001 by the devoted faithful of Baia Sprie, under the guidance of the late Ciprian Suărășean priest, episcopal vicar of the Orthodox Diocese of Maramureș and Sătmar. The construction work was carried out over the course of three years by a team of skilled woodworkers from Rona de Sus, up to the finishing stage. During this time, the interior finishes were completed by a local team. Once the finishes were completed, the iconostasis—carved in oak by sculptor Gheorghe Dunca from Satul Nou de Sus—was installed.
To raise the tower, a team of woodworkers from Chiuzbaia was brought in; they successfully built and positioned the tower at a height of 38 meters, including the cross at the top. In 2014, interior painting began in an appropriate style for wooden churches in Maramureș, carried out by certified painter Emil Dunăre and his team of artisans.
The Orthodox Parish dedicated to “Saints Constantine and Helen” in Baia Sprie now functions as an independent parish. The church’s feast day is celebrated each year on May 21.
